I am fortunate to be a Sigma Ambassador and a couple of weeks ago they contacted me and asked if I would like to use the the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.0 OS HSM l C. The “C” stands for their Contemporary range in the new Global Vision lens line up. Sigma is now arranging their lenses into three groups, Contemporary, Art and Sports.

Their has been a lot of hype and speak of the new Sigma lens lineup and lenses like the Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG HSM Art, have been causing a stir. I was eager to test this lens and another one, the 30mm f1.4 DC HSM, but more on that lens later.
My first impression of the 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM is that Sigma have all intention of stirring things up. I love the new finish on the lenses. It feels solid and the black finish gives it a great upmarket look. The previous 17-70 f2.8-4.5 DC HSM was highly regarded and I Iook forward to putting the new lens through it’s paces. I will not be conducting a full on scientific review of this lens, but more of a user review, for users, by a user.
Real world use with real world results. This first blog will be a introduction to the lens and as mentioned, first impressions.
The lens has a elegant look to it with the new lettering in white and not the gold as the old lens. The old matt finish is replaced by plastic barrel with a solid feel to it and smooth zoom. When compared to a kit lens you immediately feel the difference and know that this lens is a step up.
This lens is not much bigger than the Canon 18-55 kit lens, despite the fact that it has a longer zoom range. Clicking on the images above will take you to the Sigma webpage.
From first use I have found the lens easy to hold and the zoom works smoothly and positively. Switches for AF/MF and the OS work well and are easy to use and find. Focusing I am happy to say is very accurate. Low light focusing to date is quite good although really dark scenes do make it hunt slightly.
I will do another post with test images in the near future when I have had a good chance to test it a bit more out in the field.
